Painted Coats by Suzan Pitt

I used to sell painted coats in the 1980s and then went on to other things. This summer I started some new pieces and am continually making these as well as painting in my studio in Los Angeles. I think of them as animated objects which can move about in the world- walking in the street, sitting at a bar, coming through a doorway, emerging from a car... Each coat is like no other- they are one of a kind artworks you can wear or hang on the wall. I'm inspired by images from popular culture (comics, advertising, historical paintings, trash and lettering found everywhere)and images from my films and watercolors. I love to juxtapose multiple images to create a chain of association to the viewer, much like my paintings but simpler- and I hope a coat will make someone happy- that the positive energy from the coat will surround the wearer and surprise those who see it. The coats are for sale at Patricia Field's store in New York http://patriciafield.com/ and from Dec 3-28, 2015 at the New York Dover Street Market http://newyork.doverstreetmarket.com/dsmpaper/new_spaces.html 160 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10016. I also sometimes sell coats from my studio. A collection of coats will be presented along with my paintings at The Arts Company in Nashville, as well as appearing during Nashville Fashion Week in April, 2016. Below are some photos of a few of my coats:
